Shipping and Maritime Operations SCQF 6 (Mallaig) NC

What is special about this course?

This course is designed to allow entrance to several different industries within the maritime sector. 
You'll be given the grounding to enable you to progress to further qualifications which form part of deck and engineer officer training programmes in the Merchant Navy or, alternatively, to follow a career in shore based maritime operations. 

These options could include aquaculture, logistics and a range of modern apprenticeships including harbour operations, deck rating and aquaculture. 

RYA Certification studied during the course:

  • RYA Day Skipper Theory
  • RYA Intermediate or Advanced Powerboat

The level the student undertakes will be determined by the course and RYA tutors based on experience and performance.

You will also have the advantage of being taught by a master mariner and have the use of our own vessel, the Levanto, for practical aspects of your course.

Entry requirements

There are several routes to gain entry to the course:

  • Successful completion of the NQ in Maritime and Aquaculture Skills
    Or
  • Have Nat 5 in Maths and one science subject and an interest in working in the maritime sector
    Or
  • Be considering a career change or progression  into the maritime sector and have suitable experience or any combination of relevant Highers and HNC/HND or Degree qualifications

How will I study my course?

  • Full Time

You normally need to commit to 18 hours per week (2-3 days: Mon/Tue/Wed) of blended learning time consisting of timetabled learning and personal study.

For the practical elements of your course, some of your timetabled learning will take place in and around our Mallaig College Centre.

What can I do on completion of my course?

Pathway 1: Cadetship, this course provides a pathway into engineering and deck officer positions after three more years of study. 

Pathway 2: Modern apprenticeship with a suitable ferry or merchant navy shipping company. Apprenticeships are available in retail, hospitality, Engineering, Deck and Harbour Operations

Pathways 3:  Aquaculture entering the sector at farm technician, senior farm technician or boat crew.
