UHI Business Idea Lews Castle College prize-winners
Congratulations to the 3 Lews Castle College students who were successful in the finals of the UHI Business Idea competition. The Competition attracted 116 entries from across the UHI Partnership with the students submitting the best 15 entries were invited to the finals day at Inverness College UHI.
Each of the students had to deliver a 10 minute presentation and then answer questions from the judges for a further 20 minutes. At the Awards Ceremony in the evening, all of the finalists from Lews Castle College UHI were rewarded for their efforts with one of the eight prizes on offer.
Harrison Wood won £500 as winner of in the Best Presentation category with his idea for a Craft Brewery based on Harris. Harrison is in his first year at the College studying for an HNC in Business.
In the Best Culture and Environment Business category Martin Zweifel was awarded the top prize of £500. Martin is in the fourth year of his BA (Hons) Business and Management course and presented his idea of fish export business focusing on high quality, local SME producers.
Finally Gina MacDonald, a BA Fine Art student studying at the Taigh Chearsabhagh Centre in Lochmaddy, won £500 in Best Social Impact category. Gina’s idea of a locally grown herbal supplement to slow the progress of dementia was successful in one of the most keenly fought categories. Unfortunately Gina was unable to travel to Inverness so in best UHI traditions delivered her presentation using Video Conferencing.
All the students taking part in the finals felt that even without the prizes, this was an incredibly useful experience, and Martin and Harrison are already thinking about their entries for next year’s competition.
