Uist Unearthed brings its interactive exhibition to Stornoway as it is shortlisted for two Archaeological Achievement Awards from the Council for British Archaeology.

Since its launch in January 2020 the Uist Virtual Archaeology Project has been gathering wide attention from around the world for its pioneering design approach, which uncovers Uist’s world-class archaeology for new audiences.

The hard work of UHI Outer Hebrides academics behind the project is now being recognised by the Council for British Archaeology.

The project has been nominated for the Archaeological Innovation Award as well as the Public Dissemination or Presentation Award. Winners will be announced at the end of November.

The Uist Virtual Archaeology Project is delivered by UHI Outer Hebrides Archaeology staff, in partnership with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

From this innovative digital project comes the Uist Unearthed app. It allows users to explore five Augmented Reality reconstructions of archaeological sites along the Hebridean Way. Each reconstruction is informed by archaeological data gathered over decades of excavation and study in the region.

The App is complemented by a multimedia exhibition, which has visited heritage hubs and community events across Uist, as well as travelling further afield to the British Museum and National Museum of Scotland. It will now come to Stornoway this November where local students, school pupils and the public will be welcome to UHI Outer Hebrides to immerse themselves in the archaeology of the Outer Hebrides using the latest digital technology.

The public will be welcome to come and try Uist Unearthed for themselves on Wednesday 23rd November at UHI Outer Hebrides Stornoway Campus - https://www.outerhebrides.uhi.ac.uk/events/

Project Manager Dr Rebecca Rennell said: – “Uist Unearthed demonstrates how digital innovation delivers new and engaging ways to present our amazing archaeology.  This pioneering project puts the Outer Hebrides at the national forefront of digital heritage applications, but this is just the beginning – we are currently working with funders and our partners at the Comhairle to develop Phase 2 of the project which will allow us to create similar digital experiences for other archaeological sites across these islands.”

UHI Outer Hebrides Principal Hannah Ritchie-Muir added: “We are delighted our staff have received this recognition from the Council for British Archaeology. The team behind Uist Virtual Archaeology Project have designed, developed, and delivered an innovative and unique project that is bringing the archaeology of the Outer Hebrides to national and international audiences.”

Cllr Donald Crichton, Chairman of the Comhairle’s Sustainable Development Committee, said: “The Comhairle welcomes the inclusion of this fascinating and innovative project on the Archaeological Achievements Awards short list.

“The Uist Virtual Archaeology Project demonstrates that, through partnership working, cutting edge approaches to archaeology can be both economically and culturally beneficial. Not only does it show case some our fantastic archaeological sites, but it also enables new audiences to engage with the archaeological resource of the Outer Hebrides’.

Dr Jen Vanderhoven, UHI Vice-Principal Engagement, added: “I'm so pleased that the Uist Virtual Archaeology Project has been shortlisted for not one, but two awards. UHI was founded on the principles of harnessing local knowledge, delivering social change and supporting communities to flourish. Uist Unearthed demonstrates these principles by bringing to life our ancient communities and creating a strong connection between our younger generations and our archaeological heritage.”

Natalie Campbell, Head of Enterprise Support for Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in the Outer Hebrides area team, said: “We were really pleased to support this cutting-edge Uist Unearthed archaeology exhibit to go on tour and promote itself to build a good reputation, which will attract even more visitors to the physical exhibit in Uist in the future. It’s fantastic to hear that the fantastic project has been shortlisted for archaeological achievement awards.”

The Uist Virtual Archaeology Project is funded by the ERDF Natural and Cultural Heritage Fund, administered by NatureScot. It is also funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, and Stòras Uibhist. The app and exhibition were created in collaboration with PEEL.X with Gaelic content from Ceòlas.
