Tell us a little about your career path – what did you study, where have you worked and gained experience:
I first studied Business Management in the Nicolson Institute and ever since then I have wanted to teach the subject. I had an amazing teacher who encouraged me to go further in my business studies and taking her advice, I finished school and applied for the NC Business Management course with Lews Castle College. I loved the variety of subjects and continued my studies earning my Honors degree.
I was very fortunate to be offered a Graduate position with Highlands and Islands Enterprise where I started my career in Human Resources. My focus was implementing a HR system and I undertook some generalist work which included processing absences and contracts.
I decided to do a master’s degree in human resource management in Inverness and thinking back on my studies in Stornoway, really made me appreciate how lucky I was to study on such a beautiful island.
I completed my studies and went on to work for Barchester Healthcare as a HR Co-ordinator in the Healthcare Industry supporting care homes throughout the pandemic. When I saw the advert for a Business and Management Lecturer position, I knew I had to apply.
I always planned on becoming a lecturer and when I saw the opportunity, I had to go for it! Working as a lecturer has been amazing as I work with people who are so welcoming and friendly, really helping me settle in. It is rewarding watching your students gain academic confidence, and this will always encourage me to become the best teacher I can be. I would always recommend the Business Management course to anyone. I loved it so much, I came back to teach it!
Why do you love to teach what you teach:
I am a firm believer that everyone should be taught employment law to help them throughout their careers regardless of what industry or job they work in. Building people’s knowledge of business is extremely rewarding, especially when you hear about the adventures students go on to have in their careers after studying Business.
Why should people learn with you? – what opportunities does your course/subject offer:
Whether you are a school leaver, business owner or just looking to develop your knowledge, the course offers the chance to learn exciting new skills that are valued by employers. We provide the knowledge to open and manage your own business whilst meeting new like-minded people.
We offer different courses that provide awards to suit your needs. Whether it is a National 5, HNC or Degree level you would like to study, the Business team will support you throughout your studies and cheer you on at your graduation!
We are currently on Blended Learning which consists of both online and face to face learning. You can also study Full-time, part-time, or flexibly to suit your personal and professional circumstances.
If you have any questions about the course, please feel free to contact me on Leanne.Morrison@uhi.ac.uk
